Treasures of the earth, entrusted to
those who give.
A private atelier of investment-grade Ceylon sapphires, Burmese rubies, and Colombian emeralds — curated from the cliffs of Isola d'Elba and pledged, in part, to the rebuilding of villages across the Indian Ocean.
A fortune that flows outward.
Stones older than empires were never meant to be hoarded. They are loaned to us, briefly, so that we may turn their light toward those still in shadow.— Hishan Gunasekara, Letter to the Foundation, 2023
The private showcase.
Pigeon-blood Ruby
Muzo Emerald
From the gem fields of Ceylon to a cliffside vault on Elba.
For four generations, the Gunasekara name has been quietly synonymous with the finest blue corundum to leave the island of Sri Lanka. The atelier moved to Isola d'Elba in 1996 — a decision made for discretion, light, and proximity to the European houses we have served, by appointment, ever since.
Every stone is hand-graded in Ratnapura, certified in Geneva, and stored in a single vault carved into the volcanic rock above Portoferraio. Provenance is not a marketing line here. It is a chain of custody we sign, by hand, with each acquisition.

What Makes a Ceylon Sapphire Truly Exceptional
The term "Ceylon" on a certificate is not merely a geographic marker — it is a constellation of geological conditions that no other mine on earth replicates. We break down cornflower hue, silk inclusions, and the Ratnapura heat-treatment debate.

From hand-grading in Ratnapura to the GRS and Gübelin labs in Geneva, our certification process involves four independent hands before a stone enters the vault. A behind-the-scenes look at the paperwork no marketing brochure shows.

At −24 metres beneath the cliffs of Portoferraio, constant humidity and zero UV exposure make volcanic tuff the ideal medium for long-term gem storage. We discuss the 1996 decision and the engineering choices that followed.
